100 Days of Programme Communication

ImageDrawing on the experience of the tsunami crisis of December 2004, where programme communication was effectively neglected at the cost of unnecessary illness, injury and even death, immediately after the earthquake that ravaged northern Pakistan on October 8 the need for a programme communication response was recognized and responded to. Even as program staff became absorbed in rescue and relief efforts, proactive efforts and an inter-sectoral approach, programme communication became an integral part of the relief and rehabilitation efforts. The rapid communication response has been appreciated by many as necessary and timely.

In the first 100 days of the communication response to the earthquake two FM radio stations were set up and a programming partnership was forged with another, Boy Scouts were deployed for awareness raising and motivation, communication items were produced and distributed, the media was proactively engaged on hygiene, water and sanitation issues, a website was launched, and preparations for the innovative Rahber programme were finalized.
